About Orthodox Iconography

Orthodox icons are sacred images that serve as windows into heaven. Each icon is created ("written") according to ancient traditions, using natural materials and techniques that have been passed down through generations.

As an iconographer in Lebanon, I approach each Byzantine icon with prayer and humility, understanding that I am simply a vessel through which the holy image emerges. The process is both artistic and deeply spiritual.

Icons are not merely decorative art but serve a liturgical and devotional purpose, connecting the viewer with the divine and providing a focus for prayer.

The Icon Creation Process

Design & Preparation

Each Byzantine icon begins with careful preparation of the wood panel and a detailed drawing based on traditional Orthodox prototypes.

Gilding & Painting

Gold leaf is applied to create halos and backgrounds, followed by multiple layers of paint made from natural pigments.

Finishing & Blessing

The completed Orthodox icon is sealed with protective varnish and traditionally blessed in a church before being delivered.
